Green Wave at Their Finest
Congratulations to both the Abington High School boy’s and girl’s varsity basketball teams that have qualified for the MIAA Division 3 State Tournament. The boys currently have a record of 17-2 and are looking to earn one of the top four seeds securing two home games. The girls are standing at 10-9 and are looking forward to making some noise in the upcoming tournament and turn some heads as they knock off the higher seeded opponents.
The boys have been led by a solid group of seniors. The backcourt Guards, Ryan Chambers and Kristian LaPointe, who have both surpassed the 1000 point mark mid-way through the season lead the offensive attack along with sharpshooters, Damien Wilson and Corey Donlan. Greg Cronin, Rob Cornish, and Sean Lawton add the height, as in each game they redirect shots, pull in rebounds, and punish opponents’ down low. The Green Wave have gone back to old school basketball the past few seasons, relying on hustle, defense, and all around team play to overpower their opponents and it has been a success thus far. The boys have secured their second straight South Shore League titles, marking the first time in school history that back to back championships have been captured in basketball. The Green Wave is looking forward to carrying their momentum into the post-season and making another run at a State Title.
The girls have had a season full of ups and downs but they seem to be on the upswing as of late. They recently qualified for tournament and are starting to raise some eyebrows at their performances. The big surprise this season has been the ability of the freshman class to step on to the varsity scene and make a splash. Starting point guard Nora O’Neil and starting center Amanda Hawkesworth have been two standouts for the lady wave this season and have promising futures for the program. The seniors however, lead the way for this talented young group and are showing them the ropes as the season progresses. Captains Lauren Marella and Allison Griggs are the leaders of the team and hope to make their final season in the lady wave uniform a success.
Come support both the boys and girls varsity basketball teams this post-season as they look to add to their accomplishments and make a run at achieving the ultimate goal of bringing a State Championship back to the halls of Abington High School.
