"Dr.G."), teacher and department head of English Language Arts at Abington High School.If you are looking for the PowerPoint you saw in class, an electronic handout, directions for an assignment, a link to the website we used in class or the blog on which to comment for homework, information about the Student Arts Magazine or Very Open Mic Night, this is the place for you!

VERY OPEN MIC NIGHTS Minimize

Everyone in the AHS community is welcome to join us for our first 2011-2012 Very Open Mic Night, to perform or just to listen. Come to the PKS Room on Thursday October 20 from 6:30 to 9 p.m.Traditionally, we have poets reading original poetry, but we have expanded to include:

  • reading friend's poems
  • reading famous and favorite poems
  • recitations from PoetryOutLoud contestants
  • instrumentals or vocals
  • original songs or covers
  • short, short stories
  • essay excerpts
  • scenes from plays
  • solos, duos, and bands
  • instrumentalists, too.

We start setting up at 6:00 and begin by 6:30--admission is free! We are usually enjoying performances until 9:00 p.m. and there are prizes for participation and light refreshments, too.

PoetryOutLoud Minimize

PoetryOutLoud is a national poetry recitation competition. School finals will be in December this year, regionals in January, state Finals in February, with Nationals in April. ESU Shakespeare Competition Minimize

This competition, sponsored by English Speaking Union, challenges participants to perform a 20 line monologue from one of the Bard's plays and one sonnet--from memory. Visit www.esuus.org for more information. The AHS competition will take place in the fall, semis at Babson in January, states in February, nationals in NYC  April  2012.

Massmouth visits AHS on March 24th Minimize

A massmouth storytelling team visited AHS on March 24, 2011 to promote the skills, benefits, and sheer fun of telling and listening to stories.  Andrea Lovett, Abington resident, hosted the event in the Paul K. Smith room.

Juniors and Seniors listened to a range of personal narratives and were invited to tell their own stories in a "Turn and Tell" workshop. Thank you, AEF and the Abington Cultural Council, for sponsoring this massmouth      event and teacher training.

America At War Multimedia Exhibit Minimize

This year's seniors were the first of my students to build a Multimedia Gallery at AHS to show their understanding of the Literature of 20th century America's War-time Experience. I was able to invite you to the exhibit by putting photographs, courtesy of school librarian Mrs. Crowley, into a video editing program called Animoto. Students can use this program for presentations, too.
